le mois en livre #02/14

Da hätte ich doch fast schon wieder die Bücher im Februar vergessen. Dabei waren die allesamt recht lesenswert. "Me before You" (dt. "Ein ganzes halbes Jahr") von Jojo Moyes habe ich anfangs links liegen lassen, denn obwohl der "Hype" nicht an mir vorbei gegangen ist, schien mir der Klappentext wenig attraktiv. Als ich es dann zweiter Hand ganz günstig in die Finger bekam, griff ich einfach zu. Es liest sich sehr schnell weg und gen Ende sollte man dann doch Taschentücher bereit liegen haben. Schöne Geschichte. "A place called freedom" (dt. "Die Brücken der Freiheit") von Ken Follett war ein Geschenk und Follett geht ja eigentlich immer. Verglichen mit anderen seiner Geschichten fand ich das Buch ein wenig schwächer, aber dennoch unterhaltsame Lektüre zwischen Schottland, London und Virginia. Im Übergang zum März habe ich dann Henning Mankells "Die Rückkehr des Tanzlehrers" gelesen. Ich kenne bisher nur das "Prequel" der Wallander-Romane und die "Daisy Sisters" aus dem letzten Monat, finde allerdings Mankells Stil ganz ansprechend und die Übersetzung auch gut. Ich höre quasi wie die Schweden da miteinander sprechen. Diese Geschichte ist ebenfalls unterhaltsam geschrieben, auch wenn die Ahnung, wie sich alles auflösen könnte, für mich ein bisschen zu früh kam. 

Me before You - Jojo Moyes

Louisa Clarke is in her late twenties, living in a small town and loving her small waitressing job. She has a rather unique style but that's the most exciting thing about her life. It all changes when she suddenly looses her job and somehow stumbles into a new one as a caretaker. Her boss is Will Turner who hates his life in a wheelchair, barely being able to do anything by himself. The time they spend together from now on changes them both.

If you're able to let yourself dive into the story and connect to its main characters you'll find yourself in tears by the end of the book. Liked it.

A place called freedom - Ken Follett

The miner Malachi ("Mack") McAsh works as a firemen and miner in 18th century Scotland. He runs away from his job and difficult life to London where he keeps on fighting for worker's rights. As this is not in the interest of some rich men he is framed for a crime he did not commit and sent off to the colony of Virginia where he has to work for seven years.

I like reading novels by Follett and this one was no exception. Compared to other stories this is weaker at times but nevertheless entertaining.

The return of the dancemaster - Henning Mankell

Stefan Lindmann is a young police officer who just has been diagnosed with cancer. When he hears about the death of former colleague Herbert Molin who had retired to the countryside he sponteanously decides to go there. When he also gets involved in the investigations he finds out that he had never truly known Molin... 

I have not read much by Mankell but i guess this is about to change. I loved the translation (read the German version) as you could "hear" the Swedish talk between the lines. The idea of a possible solution came too soon for me but it still was an entertaining read.
